Before cleaning your Hunter Douglas product at home, please refer to our Care and Cleaning Guide. Hunter Douglas window treatments are designed to require minimal care and cleaning. Necessary care may include:
- Regular, light dusting. Do not use magnetic cleaners such as a dusting mitt on light-dimming fabrics, as this will damage the light-dimming backing.
- Vacuum gently using the brush attachment on any vacuum cleaner. Most products may be vacuumed using a vertical stroke, except for Luminette® Privacy Sheers and Architella® Elan® and Architella Elan Eclipse® fabrics.
- Use a can of compressed air or a hairdryer on the non-heat setting to dust off selected window coverings.
Household Cleaning Products
Not all Hunter Douglas window treatments can be spot-cleaned due to the process. Download our Care and Cleaning Guide to determine if this method is safe for your product.
- For plastic parts such as LiteRise handles, we recommend cleaning using soap and water, being cautious to stay away from the fabric.
- For vinyl slats such as Palm Beach Shutters, use mild soap and water. Do not use ammonia-based products.
- For wood or alternative wood slats such as Heritance or NewStyle shutters, no products should be used; the shutters should be dusted.
- If spot cleaning is an option for your product, we recommend using a mild detergent (no additives and non-abrasive) and a clean, white cloth.
Methods for Removing Bugs
To prevent damage to delicate fabrics, resist the urge to use any type of stick, wand or handle to push out pests that are caught in your window shades. We recommend gently blowing them out using a can of compressed air or a hairdryer on a cool setting.
Cleaning In-Between Sheers
To clean in between sheers, blow away dirt and debris between the vanes using clean compressed air. A hairdryer set on the cool setting may work.
Luminette® Wrinkles & Creases
The steaming methods below can be used to help minimize hard wrinkles or creases.
Steam Hand Method
- Rotate the vanes to the fully opened position.
- Apply warm distilled or bottled water to a clean, white cloth.
- Support the fabric from behind using another clean, dry cloth.
- Blot the wrinkled or creased area with the wet cloth.
- Let the area air dry.
Steam Machine Method
- Rotate vanes to the fully opened position.
- Steam from the back side of the fabric whenever possible. Set the steamer to its lowest possible setting, not to exceed 212° F (100° C).
- The steaming unit should never directly touch the fabric. Hold the wand at least 2" to 3" away from the fabric.
- Use slow, continuous vertical movements. Begin at the top of the fabric and work your way down.
- Let the area air dry.
As with all textiles, Luminette fabrics are subject to some variations. The fabric will change as its position changes. Minor wrinkles, puckers, or other variations can appear and are inherent to this textile product. Such variations, like those just mentioned, are normal, acceptable quality.
Pirouette® and Water-Repellent Additives
Water-repellent additives such as Scotchguard™ are not recommended for use on Pirouette fabrics. After testing, we have determined that these products can damage the fabric.
We do not recommend spot cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, or injection/extraction cleaning for Pirouette, as these may harm the fabric.
